Defence & Space Industry
The defence industry incorporates the thousands of Australian businesses, men and women across the country who use their expertise, experience and trade skills to supply and support the Defence Force but are not enlisted personnel.
South Australia, as Australia’s defence state, is home to a significant cluster of world-class businesses delivering many of the country’s largest and most complex projects. Major defence companies across the aerospace, land, systems and maritime domains have their headquarters or significant operations in the state, with Salisbury being home to many of them.
The City of Salisbury as the high-technology centre of the Australian defence industry and home to a large concentration of defence companies including Saab Australia Pty Ltd, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, General Dynamics Land Systems Australia, the RAAF Base Edinburgh and Defence Science and Technology Group, is well positioned to support future industry growth and companies looking to enter the state. Business is also well supported through the University of South Australia – Mawson Lakes Campus which has leading R&D institutes and centres including the Future Industries Institute, Institute for Telecommunications Research, Advanced Computing Research Centre, and the Defence and Systems Institute.
South Australia already has an active civil and defence space community of industry, universities, research centres, and government, and holds an important position in the Australian aerospace industry, particularly with respect to R&D, and as a key location for supply companies in high-tech industries.
As we head into the fourth industrial revolution; a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way with live, work, and relate to one another, the South Australian innovation ecosystem is able to capitalise on these opportunities and become a driver of new technologies. The City of Salisbury is well positioned to support this growth.
